Garbage and Recycling

2004 Recycling Events:

1st - The spring semi-annual collection of computers and other electronics will be held on Saturday, April 17th.  The collection will be held at Cascade Asset Management on the east side of Madison.  For more information check Cascade's web page at  In addition, the Dane County recycling web page lists other opportunities to reuse and recycle computers and other electronics throughout the year.  Their site is and clicking on the recycling symbol at the bottom of the page. 

2nd - Compost bin sale to be held on Saturday, May, 1st.  As of now the locations are to be:  Fitchburg, Madison/Alliant Energy Center, Middleton, Mount Horeb, Stoughton, Sun prairie, Verona.  This event has been extremely popular, with sales of over 2,000 bins each year.   

General Information: 

  • Trash & Recyclables MUST be at the curb By 7:00 a.m.
  • Trash & Recycling day is Thursday

  • Aluminum & Tin Cans 

  • Glass Containers
    Clear, Green, Brown 

  • Plastics #1 & #2

  • Corrugated Cardboard
    Flatten and cut into 3 ft. sections, and keep dry 

  • Magazines
    Bundle in 6 inch stacks

  • Newspapers
    Place in brown grocery bag, do not mix with other paper or cardboard

What About ...


Stoves, refrigerators, microwaves, washers, dryers, freezers, etc. can be recycled when purchasing new appliances, disposed of privately, or Waste Management will collect these items for a fee by calling 273-2500.


Tires are not accepted for curbside pick-up. Tires can be recycled where new ones are purchased, or can be recycled privately.

Leaves & Yard Waste

Leaves and yard waste are not accepted at the county landfill. Residents are encouraged to compost at the village compost site located at 712 Blue Mounds Street (located on the north side of the salt/storage shed).   Please remove from the compost site the bags or containers that you transported the compost in.
